Reality is Fluid, It is Your Mind that is Fixed

It was the middle of a cold night in early January of 2018. I was in a car with several friends and we were caravanning to the desert just east of San Diego.

We stopped at this old wash at the entrance to this canyon with a river of sand running through it. There were holes in the sides that gave the impression of portals and gateways.

We exited the cars and began to circle up. This was my first outing with this crew of people that I had met or known in some capacity over the past 2 years, so no one was really a stranger to me.

Given it was my first desert journey, I was totally unprepared and overpacked. I had on too many layers of clothes, a giant backpack that didn't have a chest strap, and for some reason, I was given a giant djembe to carry.

one of the many pathways through the canyon

Our meditation teacher—let's call him S for now—instructed us to walk single file through the canyon.

It was cold, easily in the 40s or 50s. We stopped to meditate once or twice and he instructed us to keep walking.

My mind was going in all sorts of directions and yet was still focused simultaneously. The energy in the wash was one of the most intense natural forces I had felt at that point.

I asked S about the holes in the canyon walls. He said that this place was like an inter-dimensional highway that various beings would use to traverse, and if we meditated well enough on the holes, we might see them.

I was no stranger to hearing stories like this and fully believed in magic and shamanic worlds from my own experiences.

We walked for what felt like hours until we reached the other side of the canyon. S told us that we were to look for this place of power called the Wind Caves. He said we would be meditating there for the night and have a discussion. He also informed us that we would have to find the Wind Caves using our heart and will—none of us had ever been there before.

We stopped at these crossroads and began to discuss which way to go.

"I feel it's this way."

"That way feels correct."

"My intuition is saying this way."

Several of the young men in the group felt very insistent that their sense of direction was correct. Go figure.

We began to walk along what felt like a path for at least another 45 minutes. We had long passed the Wind Caves, it turned out, and S was just indulging us in our confusion and inability to work together.

I remained silent, being the new person in the group. We had passed this small, beaten-up sign about a quarter mile back that said "Wind Caves" on it and pointed up this rocky trail. I tried to bring this up to the group and was quickly disregarded as the newbie.

At a certain point, S told us to take a break and rest. He told two of the guys to go search up this trail and then come back.

We were sitting there in a loose circle. He stood up and pointed with his walking stick and said, "You see that star there?"

What was hilarious was that there were thousands of stars in the sky on such a clear night.

He pointed out the star again and everyone agreed they saw the right one he was pointing to.

"Watch," he said as he began to slightly move his stick like he was tracing something in the sky.

The star began to move. It began to move in unnatural and curved directions.

I began to burst into joy and laughter.

Magic was real.

"No way!" I exclaimed.

"Yes way!" said S.

Myself and about half the group all saw the star moving and tracing in the direction he was pointing his stick.

One of the women said she didn't see it and sounded pretty frustrated. I later found out she was super annoyed that the new guy (me) had seen it and she hadn't.

He pointed another star out and began to do the same thing. Then he pointed to the moon. The moon began to move locations in the sky and grow brighter and dimmer in luminosity.

I was utterly floored. In that moment, my understanding of reality collapsed, and all that was left was the joy of the divine as I had come to witness, firsthand, that magic was real.

"The stars and heavenly bodies move in the sky and are always moving. It's just your mind that keeps them fixed. When we develop a relationship with the stars, they are very accommodating to dance and play when we ask them to. They are enlightened beings, giving off light to all who gaze in their direction. Connect with them through your heart, let go of the grasping of your mind, and see things as they are rather than what you want them to be."

"What about the moon? Is she also an enlightened being?" someone asked.

"Not yet—she reflects the light of the sun and is a liberated being. But she still has individuality and sovereignty. You can't will her to perform, but she responds very well to heart and third-eye energy."

"Most beings in the universe respond well to heart energy because it is pure, true, and filled with love. Remember that next time you need to work together so you don't make us walk an extra two miles in the sand."

We began our walk back to the cars, some four to five miles back.

I couldn't stop smiling and felt a constant flow of joy and energy flowing through my being.

My world was never the same again… and little did I know, that was just simply the beginning.

P.S. - If you are local to West LA, I am hosting a Introduction to Mysticism Class. It is an experiential based class with experiences similar to what I shared above. I would love to have you join us. Click here to RSVP
