Closing out January & What Coming Next
January flew by huh? I know it did for me.
I’ve had momentum with signing multiple new clients this month and meeting some awesome new people & communities here in LA.
I wanted to share some things with you that I’m personally enjoying right now and give you a taste of what is to come in the next couple of weeks.
3 Things that are helping me focus on my goals & win across the board:
Dopamine Fasting - This is truly an art and a way of living that helps you become more grounded, stable, and in your own energy. It eliminates the constant bombardment & subconscious influence that we receive from living in a technologically integrated world. Writing first thing in the AM & Deep Work - Like you, I’m a busy individual. I have clients I do their marketing for, clients I mentor & coach, a book I’m writing, classes I’m preparing for etc. However, with all of those things, there is a single task I prioritize in the morning that will move the needle toward my single overarching goal. (It is a secret for now) 🙂 I’m typically not super creative or inspired in the evening, so first thing in the AM I work on the tasks for this goal before I do my client-related deliverables. It’s been working great. You reading this newsletter right now proof and part of that.
Deep Work is a concept I read in a book years ago. At a high level, it makes the case that most people do their best work with no more than 4 hours of pure uninterrupted work. During this time, I use Brick to block all nonessential apps on my phone and keep my phone on silent. I use a little desktop timer and pick a task then set the timer for what I think it will take for me to accomplish it. I like to test if something is going to take me longer or less than expected. If it’s a task I have been putting off, I typically get it done in under the time I think it will take me.
Using these two methods of creative focus in the morning & deep work for my client deliverables has allowed me to 1) trust my ability to deliver for clients while making progress on my own projects & 2) shown me that I really can do much more than I think is possible in my own mind.Herbal Formulas - As I get older and accept the reality that I won’t be invincible forever, I ensure that I am taking a herbal formula every month that focuses on specific organ health. This month, I am taking a classic Chinese formula that is a blood builder & helps with circulation. Given the fires we have had here in LA, I am also consuming tea made from herbs for Lung health in tandem.
Closing Thought
It has been just over 15 months since I was laid off from a pretty comfy job and I ask myself, why did it need to come to that point for me to really put the same effort into my solopreneur journey like I am now? The only answer I can come up with is mindset & self-trust. I’ve never really resonated with the term mindset to begin with because I’ve always thought it was a given that whatever you set your mind to you achieve one way or the other. In reality, it’s more about your paradigm & the quantum story you have made up in your mind about the way you are and the way reality is. Depending on your relationship with yourself in that story dictates the level of self trust you exhibit in your day to day life and the quality of the life the character experiences through the Game of Life. For me personally, I found that I was leaving a lot of personal power & energy on the table by allowing my habits and brain chemistry to have their way while breeding the illusion of self-control which was non-existent. This is why I began to experiment with dopamine fasting & other concepts because it brought me into a state of presence and the cold hard reality of how difficult it was to change something when the body is just running on autopilot. In the 4th way esoteric schools, they call this Awakening the Machine. It is intentionally bringing your awareness & attention onto the machine during moments of action and behavior which allows for a momentary charge of wakeful presence to inhabit the moment in which the spirit of the machine aka you, becomes in charge for a moment to make the decision and alter the course of destiny. This exposure to the waking state is typically not one that most beings can hold for a long time. Mainly due to willpower and lack of energy available to them internally.
By engaging in these daily experiments with Dopamine Fasting, Deep Work, and even infusing herbal regimens into our body (which carry their own energies), we can make small changes without the devil of mediocrity & passivity on our shoulder catching a clue and sabotaging all our efforts. I believe that if you truly do have a mission & purpose in this life, then you have even more cards stacked against you just trying to keep you in your loop of sleep & “just getting by”.
For those who seek to change the world and make their local universe better, you better buckle up and get to work.
